Cures for Plantar Fasciitis - 4 Things You Can Do At Home

Expert Author Richard W Gibbons
Anyone who suffers from the nagging type of heel pain, known as plantar fasciitis, will tell you that it's one of the worst forms of heel pain that one can endure. This is especially the case when you get to middle age and beyond, are carrying some excess weight or work at a job where standing for long periods is the norm.
Those bony, calcified growths, known as heel spurs, can certainly cause the plantar fascia (that runs from the toes, underneath the arch of the foot then up to the heel) to rub and cause one heck of a debilitation unless you do something positive about it.
When plantar fasciitis gets too uncomfortable to live with, the proper and immediate remedy or cure for it should be employed before any long term damage is done. Consulting with your doctor or podiatrist to establish the best plantar fasciitis cure or treatment for your own particular circumstances is most recommended. Although it is also important that you don't just wait until you see a professional, if that's going to take you some time, but rather try and do the necessary first aid treatment yourself with a view to alleviating the soreness and the pain.
Here is a list of several plantar fasciitis cures, treatments or remedies that I've compiled so that you can do something to help the situation from your own home. These cures for plantar fasciitis can complement whatever your doctor has prescribed you with:
1. Ice pack
Ice can do wonders on your muscles. Ice should be applied on the affected area for up to three times in a day, in a span of say 10 to 15 minutes each time. Ice can soothe the pain and aid in reducing the swelling, thus initiating a much faster relief and recovery from the condition.
2. Do some stretches
Stretches can help restore the functionality of the affected ligaments. However, do this only if there is very little or no more pain in the area. Your stretching exercises need not be strenuous or excessive. Remember, you don't want to make the problem anymore worse than what it already is, right? Moving the muscles around the affected area just slightly each day is enough to start the healing process.
3. Use a night splint
Special night splints can be used to keep the muscles in the heel and the calves well in place throughout the night. Note that there are high chances that they'll tighten up during your sleep. Find a good product that you can comfortably wear overnight - the one that would gently stretch your calf muscles as you sleep. There are plenty of places online where you can buy these. Just look them up on Google.
4. Rest
Nothing relieves or cures any dysfunction better than a good rest. As such, one of the best cures for plantar fasciitis is not using your foot or feet too much. That means no extended walking or running for you for the time being. Rest and relaxation allow the body to begin the self repairing process. For most of us with busy lives this can be a real challenge. However, with a bit of self-discipline, proper rest and relaxation can work wonders.
Consult with your doctor to know more of the different plantar fasciitis cures or treatments that he or she can recommend for you. Oftentimes, a non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drug (such as Voltarin or Traumeel) may need to be prescribed in order to treat the pain and the swelling associated with the condition. These can be effective for occasional or slight to mild cases. However, for more persistent or extreme cases, prescription medication or even surgery (for the more refractory situations) may need to be considered for successful longer term rehabilitation.
