While the likes of Sydney and Melbourne are generally the most popular places to visit in Australia, the town of Broome in Western Australia really is a hidden gem in the nation's crown.
Broome may not be the first place you think of when you are planning a holiday in Australia but, with a great range of great attractions, it really is a must-visit nonetheless. Here, we take you through some of the highlights of the town.
Pearl Luggers
Broome has a rich history of pearling and, in the early 20th century, the town was home to between 300 and 400 sailing boats, which exported pearls all over the world.
The pearl luggers in the heart of Broome's Chinatown give visitors an insight into what life was like for the people who were involved in pearl harvesting.
The two restored lugger ships now act as a museum and contain old equipment that was used during the harvests, such as diving suits, as well as being home to a huge, authentic pearl.
This is a must-see for all visitors to Broome, as it showcases the history of the town's main industry.
The Japanese Cemetery
The Japanese Cemetery is close to Broome's Deepwater port and is the place where over 900 pearl divers were laid to rest.
The iconic landmark demonstrates the dangers that accompanied the booming pearl industry, especially during its beginnings, as well as the huge role the Japanese played in Broome's pearl trade.
Sun Pictures
A visit to Broome would not be complete without visiting the world's oldest operating outdoor cinema.
Opened way back in 1916, the cinema still shows the very latest film releases and is a great way to watch a movie, especially on a hot summer's day.
The cinema also holds daily tours, for those of you interested in cinematic history.
Cultured Pearling Monument
Continuing on the pearling theme, the Cultured Pearling Monuments are three life-sized bronze statues which represent three legends of the pearling industry.
The monuments, just outside of Chinatown in Broome, also have tribute plaques to all those who sailed the seas in their quest of finding pearls.
Broome Bird Observatory
If you are a birdwatcher or just have a keen interest in wildlife generally, then the Broome Bird Observatory will provide you with an opportunity to see almost all of the 310 different bird species that live in and around the Broome area.
There are a wide variety of birds at the sanctuary and visitors will be able to see both the brightly coloured species which live in Broome permanently, and those which annually migrate to the town.
