With Foot Pain, Why Does Being On My Feet For Just A Few Minutes Cause So Much Tingling And Numbness

Expert Author Dr. Joseph J Cilea, DO
Why does being on my feet for just a few minutes cause so much tingling, numbness and pain?
As with nerves located elsewhere in the body, the nerves of the feet are very delicate and extremely sensitive. The difference is that the nerves of the feet are subjected to considerably more abuse throughout the day due to a number of factors.
Walking, running, sitting for long periods of time, sitting in chairs that do not provide adequate support, wearing the wrong type or size of shoes and carrying excess weight on our frame all contribute to the damage that can be inflicted on the nerves of the feet. But what about when your feet experience a tingling sensation, numbness or pain after standing for just a short period of time?
Feeling any type of discomfort in the feet after only a few minutes of standing is never normal. If this is a problem for you, then you could be experiencing either decreased blood flow to your feet or a condition known as neuropathy, or damaged nerves.
When nerves become damaged
Anytime the nerves of the feet are subjected to damage, from whatever the source, their level of sensitivity becomes extremely heightened. When this occurs, even the slightest amount of pressure, such as something as simple as standing or walking, will cause them to react in a number of ways, including numbness, a tingling or prickly feeling or even pain.
Many people choose to ignore the symptoms in the beginning, believing and hoping that they will go away on their own. But this is not the case. Unfortunately, these symptoms will only increase in intensity, frequency and severity.
Identifying the problem is important
In order to minimize the extent of the damage to the nerves it is important to be seen by your doctor as soon as possible after the first sign of symptoms. If the true cause of this discomfort is not dealt with in a timely manner, the symptoms will only persist.
Your doctor will take a detailed history as well as perform an examination in order to rule out certain conditions. In some cases where an examination is not conclusive, they might also utilize specific tests to help determine if the nerves of the feet have been damaged. One such test is called an EMG, or an electromyogram.
Once the cause of the nerve damage has been clearly identified, your doctor will put you on the most effective treatment options.
