What Are The Most Common Knee Injuries?

Expert Author Dr. Joseph J Cilea, DO
What are the most common knee injuries?
Knee injuries are one of the most injuries encountered. They can occur during everything from sports activities, to physical exertion at work or even as a result of simple, everyday movements. While some knee injuries are mild in nature and can be remedied simply by applying ice and staying off of the leg for a short period of time, other injuries are much more severe. These require immediate medical attention and, in some cases, even surgery and rehabilitation.
Types of knee injuries
ACL injury
An injury to the anterior cruciate ligament occurs for a number of reasons:
  • when an individual is moving and changes direction rapidly
  • when an individual slows down too quickly while running
  • landing wrong after a jump
Although ACL injuries can occur from a wide variety of movements, they are typically associated with sports where cleats are required. Due to the abrupt and rigid gripping action of this type of footwear, they do not allow for slipping or sliding of the feet. This rapidly halts the movement of the individual's feet, forcing the majority of the residual movement to be absorbed by the knee.
MCL injury
An injury to the medial collateral ligament occurs when an individual receives a direct blow to the side of the knee. Forcing the knee into this unnatural movement causes this ligament to become torn. This type of injury is common in heavy contact sports such as football and soccer.
PCL injury
A posterior cruciate ligament injury occurs in one of two ways. Either a blow is received directly to the front of the knee-joint or an individual can make a simple misstep while moving, such as on a playing field. The forward momentum of the individual's body is completely absorbed by the knee, causing it to hyper-extend forward.
Torn cartilage
When referring to torn cartilage within the knee, it is referring to a torn meniscus. The meniscus is actually a pair of c-shaped pieces of cartilage that serve as cushion between the femur (thigh bone) and the tibia (shin bone). This cartilage attached to the ligaments in the knee and help to provide stability.
Cartilage tears can occur from simple acts such as pivoting the body to twisting the knee too far. They typically happen during high-contact sports, such as football or soccer. While a tear to this cartilage can be mild, most are often much more severe and require surgery to correct.
