Could Foot Pain Be Coming From The Back?

Expert Author Dr. Joseph J Cilea, DO
Whenever we experience back pain, we tend to try to isolate the cause to the back, itself. But many people do not realize that back pain can stem from the feet, as well. Much like the legs, the muscles of your feet are directly connected to, and controlled by, the nerves which originate in your back.
If you are experiencing low back pain and cannot recall a specific incident where you could have injured or over-worked your back, the pain could very well be radiating from your feet.
How these nerves can be affected
Just like many other areas of the body, when pressure is placed on the nerves of the feet, the pain can easily radiate into the lower back. This radiant pain can be felt as a pinched sensation, tingling of the legs all the way down into the feet, numbness of these areas and even a loss of strength of the legs, the feet, or both.
Our first reaction is to try to ignore the pain in the hopes that it will go away on it is own. But this is not an effective way of dealing with the underlying issue and will only cause the level of discomfort to intensify. If left untreated, the cause of the pain could worsen and lead to other more serious conditions that could eventually cause permanent damage.
What could be the cause
It is common for this pain to originate due to the shoes that we wear. Poorly fitted shoes do not provide the stability that we need when walking. Since our feet are primarily responsible for stabilizing our entire body, we need to ensure that they give us the support that we need.
Having flat feet can also lead to low back pain. Being born with flat feet means that there is a reduction in the amount of arch in your foot. This arch is necessary for offering the right amount of support. Without it, it means that there is an undue amount of stress that is being placed on the muscles and nerves of the lower back in order to compensate for the missing support.
How you can be sure
The best way to verify the origin of your foot pain is to see a pain specialist. Your doctor can conduct a thorough examination and pinpoint where the discomfort is stemming from. By performing a series of strength and dexterity tests to isolate the discomfort, your doctor will know if the pain is due to improperly fitted shoes or an actual medical condition. This will allow them to treat the condition, and not the symptoms.
